Postojna Cave and Lake Bled in one day: the five trips compared

Look at a map of Slovenia and the appeal is obvious. Postojna Cave is south-west of Ljubljana in the karst country; Lake Bled is north-west, under the Julian Alps. Both are close enough to the capital to be done from it, and the country is small enough that doing both looks like an afternoon’s work on paper.

It is not. The listings are honest about the arithmetic: these trips run from ten hours on $132 and $160-length days, through eleven on $137 and $103, to eleven and a half hours on $194 and $166. Compare that with $78 at five hours or $74 at five and a half, which cover the cave and the castle and have you back in Ljubljana for a late lunch. The extra time is the lake, and almost all of it is the distance to reach it.

That is the trade, and it is worth stating plainly before you book: you are not squeezing two half days into one. You are accepting a long day in exchange for seeing both halves of the country without moving hotels. For a lot of people visiting Slovenia for three or four days, that is exactly the right trade. For anyone travelling with small children or anyone who does not want to be in a vehicle for a large part of a day, the honest advice is to take the cave and the castle on their own and give the lake its own morning.

The second thing to understand is that these five trips are not five versions of the same product. The route is broadly the same on all of them. What differs is what you are let into at each stop. On $194 you walk into the cave, the castle and Bled Castle on the fare you have already paid. On $137 you get a 13% discount at the door instead, in a group capped at eight, with a guided tour of Bled and transfers to viewpoints around the lake. On $103 and $166 you get the vehicle, the driver and the day, and the admissions are yours.

$194 — eleven and a half hours, 852 reviews at 4.8. The most complete of the five and the most reviewed. Its inclusions name entrance to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, entrance to Bled Castle, a traditional Bled cream cake, a sightseeing tour of the Lake Bled area, pickup and drop-off inside Ljubljana and a driver-guide. Its highlights call Bled Castle the oldest Slovenian castle and describe the boat ride to the island as optional. If you want to arrive and be let into everything without producing a wallet at three separate doors, this is the one that does it.

$132 — ten hours, 271 reviews at 4.9. The shortest of the five and the highest rated at that length. Its highlights name the views from Bled Castle, the traditional pletna boat trip to Bled Island, the special train into Postojna Cave, the olm that its listing calls the cave dragon, and the legend of the knight Erazem at Predjama Castle. Inclusions are a professional English-speaking guide, an air-conditioned minivan and pickup and drop-off in central Ljubljana.

$137 — eleven hours, 135 reviews at 5.0. The highest rating on the site, from a small sample, so read it as a strong signal rather than a guarantee. Small groups of up to eight. Inclusions name a professional licensed English-speaking guide, a guided tour of Bled, transfer to scenic viewpoints around the lake, an air-conditioned vehicle and a 13% ticket discount through the agency. Guests who visit Bled Castle are given a traditional Bled cream cake with coffee or tea as a gift from the operator.

$166 — eleven and a half hours, 226 reviews at 4.7. A group tour rather than a minivan day. Inclusions are air-conditioned transportation, hotel pickup and drop-off and a driver-guide — admissions are not named. Its highlights describe the panorama of the lake and the resort town of Bled, and suggest bringing a swimsuit in summer for a dip in the lake, which none of the other four mention.

$103 — eleven hours, 15 reviews at 4.8. The lowest fare of the five and the newest listing, with the smallest review count on the site, so there is less evidence behind it than the others. Inclusions are an air-conditioned vehicle, pickup and drop-off from a centrally located meeting point and an English-speaking driver. Its highlights name the stalactite formations in Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle as the largest cave castle in the world, a traditional boat ride to Bled Island or a visit to Bled Castle, and time along the lakeshore.

The pattern. Fare tracks inclusions almost exactly. The two that name admissions or a substantial discount — $194 and $137 — sit at the top; the three that name the vehicle and the guiding sit below. Once you have added your own three admissions to the lower fares, the gap between them narrows a long way, which is the single most useful thing to know before comparing these five.

If you want everything included: $194. eleven and a half hours, with entry to Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle and Bled Castle, a sightseeing tour of the lake area, a Bled cream cake and pickup inside Ljubljana. 852 reviews at 4.8 is the strongest evidence of any long day here.

If you want the shortest version: $132. Ten hours rather than eleven and a half, with the pletna boat to Bled Island, Bled Castle and the train into the cave in the programme, and 271 reviews at 4.9 — the best rating at that length. Admissions are not in the fare.

If you want a small group: $137. Up to eight people, eleven hours, a licensed guide, a guided tour of Bled, viewpoints around the lake and a 13% ticket discount. Rated 5.0 from 135 reviews.

If you want hotel pickup: $166. It is the only one of the five whose inclusions name hotel pickup and drop-off rather than a meeting point, which is worth something at the start of an eleven-and-a-half-hour day. 226 reviews at 4.7.

The verdict. Book $194. On a day this long, the thing you are short of is not money but time and patience, and the version that lets you walk into all three sites on the fare you have already paid protects both. It also has more reviews behind it than the other four combined would need to match. Take $132 instead if ten hours is your ceiling and you are happy to buy admissions at the door — it is the best-rated trip of its length here. 1. Comparing the five fares without reading the inclusions. $194 carries three admissions; $103 carries none. Add your own tickets to the lower fare before deciding which is better value.

3. Assuming the boat to the island is always in it. The pletna boat is named on $132, $137 and $103, and described as optional on $194.
4. Treating Bled Castle and Predjama Castle as the same kind of stop. They are two different castles in two different places: one on a cliff above the lake, one built into the mouth of a cave near Postojna. Several of these trips visit both.
5. Booking the longest day for a family with small children. eleven and a half hours is a lot. $132 at ten hours is the shortest of the five, and the cave-and-castle trips at five to six hours are shorter still.
6. Judging $103 by its rating alone. 4.8 is good, but it comes from 15 reviews, which is the smallest sample on this site. $194 has 852 behind the same score.
