What to wear to Postojna Cave

People book this trip in August wearing what people wear in August, and then get on an underground train. That is the whole of the problem, and it is worth understanding rather than just being told.

A cave is not a cold place in the way a winter street is a cold place. It is a stable one. The rock does not care what the surface is doing, and that is why every honest description of Postojna says the same thing in every month: it is cool inside whatever the season. The practical consequence is unusual. On most trips your clothes are a bet on the forecast; on this one the forecast is irrelevant to the part you came for, and the packing list does not change between January and July. That is the single most useful sentence on this page.

The second thing to understand is that you are not moving much. The listings are explicit about the shape of the visit: you board an underground train, which carries you into the cave system — $74 describes seeing the passages, galleries and chambers by train, $122 and $57 both call it an electric train — and after that the guided walking route begins. Sitting still is how you start. Walking at a group’s pace, stopping whenever the guide stops, is how you continue. Neither generates the warmth that a brisk walk outdoors does, which is why a jacket you would call excessive on the surface is exactly right underground.

Third, the shoes. This is the part people get wrong far more often than the jacket, because the jacket is at least a famous piece of advice. The cave route is a made path through a working visitor attraction, not a scramble — nobody needs boots. But it is a genuine walk underground, and it is followed by Predjama Castle, which $74 describes as having restored living areas, dungeons and a secret tunnel, and which $160 describes as built into a cliff. Stairs, uneven stone and a castle carved into rock are a poor combination with sandals or smooth soles. Closed shoes with grip, and the rest of the day looks after itself.

Everything else on the list below is a small refinement of those two items. There is no specialist kit in this trip and nothing you need to buy.

There are two quite different days on this site, and only one thing is common to both.

The short trip is a cave day, and you pack for the cave. $78 is five hours from Ljubljana in a minivan for up to eight people. $74 is five and a half with a licensed driver-guide and skip-the-line. $122 is five and a half with the entrance fee for the cave and the castle inside the fare. $131 is six hours, includes both entrances and an audio guide in the castle, and is the most reviewed trip here at 4.8 from 2,655 reviews. On all of them, almost everything memorable happens underground or at the castle, so the jacket and the shoes are the entire packing decision, and you can travel with a bag the size of a paperback.

The long trip is mostly an above-ground day with a cave in it. $194 is eleven and a half hours and includes entrance to Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle and Bled Castle, a sightseeing tour of the lake and a traditional Bled cream cake. $132 is ten hours and adds the pletna boat out to Bled island. $113 and $160 swap the lake for the Adriatic and the Venetian streets of Piran. On these, the underground hour is one chapter and the rest of the day is a lake or a coast, so you are packing for two climates at once: the jacket for the cave, and sunglasses, water and comfortable clothes for everything on either side of it. $166 puts the seasonal version of this in its own highlights — bring a swimsuit in summer and swim in the lake.

The verdict. If you are taking a five or six-hour trip, pack the jacket, wear the shoes and stop thinking about it. If you are taking a ten or eleven-hour one, pack the same jacket and then pack for a normal summer or winter day on top — because the cave is one stop on it, not the whole of it. In both cases the jacket is the thing people leave behind and regret, and in both cases it is the cheapest part of the day.

1. Dressing for the weather in Ljubljana. The forecast describes the drive, not the cave. Inside it is cool whatever the season, which is why the packing list is the same in January and July.
2. Leaving the jacket in the hotel in August. The most common version of this mistake, and the one people remember, because the train ride in is the moment they notice.
3. Sandals or smooth soles. A walking route underground followed by a castle with stairs, restored rooms and a tunnel. Closed shoes with grip, every time.
4. Buying kit for it. There is nothing specialist in this day. A warm layer, a jacket, ordinary trainers and a bag that closes cover all thirteen trips.
5. Packing only for the cave on an eleven-hour trip. If Lake Bled or Piran is in your itinerary, most of your day is above ground. Sunglasses and water belong in the same bag as the jacket.
